Lowndes student arrested with gun, knives at school

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - On Thursday morning, a Lowndes High School  resource officer was alerted by a student of another student who had brought a gun to school.

The deputy found the 14 year old student and searched the book bag, which had a .22 caliber handgun and two knives inside.

The student was detained and the weapons were seized. There was no specific threat to the school, any one person, or reason to believe anyone else was involved.

The student, whose name will not be released due to age, was arrested, and has since been detained at the Thomasville Youth Detention Center.

Sheriff Chris Prine said "Actions such as this is the reason we have placed a school resource officer in each school. It is sad we have to take such measures but the safety of our children is of the utmost importance."
