About 3:30 Monday morning, Valdosta Police Department officers patrolling the 1100 block of Old Statenville Road heard a single gunshot come from the direction of an apartment complex.
They saw a dark colored vehicle tear out of the apartment complex, speeding. As they chased the car, they saw the passenger of the vehicle throw a firearm out of the window of the vehicle.
Officers caught two people, when the driver lost control and crashed in the 800 block of Bethune Street.
It turned out that a juvenile, who can't be identified, was driving the car, and the passenger, Demarques Bartee, were arrested on the spot.
Officers found a felony amount of Marijuana in the vehicle. The firearm they saw being thrown from the vehicle was discovered to have been stolen from a 2014 Burglary in Lowndes County.
"In this case, the offenders discharged a firearm in a highly populated area, which threatened the safety of the multiple residents in the area. The officers involved in this case did an excellent job taking immediate action before someone was hurt," said VPD Lieutenant Adam Bembry.
Warrants have been obtained on Bartee, who now faces five felony charges:
Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
Tampering with Evidence
Theft by Receiving Stolen Property
Possession of Marijuana
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
He also has a Misdemeanor charge of Discharge of a Firearm within 50 Yards of a Public Highway
The juvenile offender has been charged in the Juvenile Justice system with:
Driving without a Valid License
Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer
Bartee was also arrested in May 2014 in connection to a shooting on Forrestwood Drive.
