LANIER CO., GA (WALB) - A man died saving his 3-year-old daughter from the Alapaha River Saturday afternoon. Officials say the incident happened at about 2:25 p.m.
44-year-old Cary Russell Self was attempting to cross the river with his daughter from one sandbar to another, when they both got swept away by the currents.
Officials say Self was able to hold his daughter up long enough for someone to grab her from his arms. Bystanders were not able to save him from the river in time.
Georgia State Patrol troopers arrived on the scene and recovered Self's body from the river at about 5:20 p.m.
Self's daughter is safe with her mother.
