Going Mobile: Cordele

CORDELE, GA (WALB) - Cordele is the sixth stop on a six-city tour for WALB News.

We are setting up at the new Crisp County Courthouse, and everyone is invited to come by and watch our 5:30PM newscast.

Wikipedia shows that Cordele has a rich history. It is the county seat of Crisp County, with a population of  11,147 as of the 2010 census.

Cordele calls itself the Watermelon Capital of the World, because of the huge value of that crop.

Cordele was founded in 1888 by J.E.D. Shipp of Americus.  It is named for Cordelia Hawkins, eldest daughter of Colonel Samuel Hawkins, the president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railway.
