FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) - If you've ever been to Fitzgerald, you know they're known for their free ranging wild chickens. It's estimated that about 600 of them are roaming around the city.
DNR officials brought the animals here for gaming purposes. That never took off.
The city has embraced the wild birds and watches out for them.
"Just this morning I was coming into work and there was one in the middle of the road, and I stopped and let him cross the road and then I continued on. People know not to mess with them as far as harming them," said Tourism Director Alesia Davis.
The city has parlayed the wild chickens into a festival every year. The wild chicken festival is held every March.
