ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Staff at the Albany landfill are using heavy equipment to push dirt onto smoldering embers of a landfill fire, at the Gaissert Road facility.
They noticed the flames about 6:30 Monday morning, alerted the fire department, and began containing it.
There is a pumper truck on on scene, and the fire has been contained by using bulldozers.
They opened temporary spot for dumping today so the landfill still operating, and the biggest issue is two of the methane gas wells that supply the Marine Base; those had to be temporarily shut down .
At least one is damaged and will have to be repaired when fire is put out.
They aren't ware of how the fire may have started, and are concentrated right not on getting it extinguished.
