CALHOUN CO., GA (WALB) -
Storm clean-up continues in Calhoun County after Thursday morning's tornado.
The twister damaged Michael and Claudette Hayes' home on Country Club Road. They were watching WALB’s weather report before hiding in their closet as the tornado approached. It destroyed their daughter's bedroom, tore off their roof, uprooted a large tree, and blew their trampoline away. The tornado also ripped through their neighbor's home. The Red Cross is helping 13 families in Calhoun County.
"We interviewed the families, did damage assessments, and then we made sure that those families had their basic necessities in terms of food shelter and clothing,” said Nature Malone, American Red Cross Disaster Program Manager. “We provided moral support for them and made sure that everybody was going to be ok."
The Hayes family is now staying in a hotel. Red Cross officials say they're also helping families with long-term recovery plans to help them get back on their feet.
