VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Advocates for child abuse prevention held a breakfast for Child Abuse Awareness Month. This is the 20th year for the event.
There were 1,231 reports of child abuse last year in the county which was an increase from 2014.
After the breakfast, they will be putting out more than 1,000 pinwheels to represent child abuse cases in Lowndes County.
There are 77 people from various organizations that help with child abuse prevention.
The pinwheels will be placed in front of the courthouse. Each one represents a child abuse report.
"To just recognize how many children are abused in our community. The magnitude of the numbers. If you had all those children standing there," Sandra Wilcher, Prevent Child Abuse advisory board member.
Organizers say even though there is an increase in cases, they hope it's because they're bringing awareness to the issue, and helping the families who need it.
The pinwheels will stay out all month.
