American Heart Association encourages people to get out and walk

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Wednesday was a perfect day to lace up your shoes and go for a walk.

And that's what the American Heart Association urged people to do.

It was the group's National Walking Day. 

YMCA Health and Wellness Instructors said that walking is one of the easiest forms of fitness.

They also said walking for at least 30 minutes a day helps keep you healthy. 

"The major health benefits of walking is that it reduces the risk of chronic disease such as Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. Another would be to increase your stamina, just make you feel better and it reduces stress," said YMCA Health and Wellness Director Donnette Kline Lewis.

They said that walking burns calories and strengthens bone and muscle density. 

They also reminded people to stretch before and after walking.

    The Lee County fire chief is issuing a warning tonight about how hot playground equipment can get during the summer. Chief David Forrester said some equipment can reach more than 150-degrees this time of the year.
