AUGUSTA, GA (WALB) - The excitement continued at the Masters on Monday as former Albany resident Nancy Lopez was recognized at the Augusta Mayor's masters reception.
World golf hall of famed Nancy Lopez became the first female to receive this prestigious honor for her lifelong contributions to the game of golf.
"As you get older and you don't really get to play the game and compete and win anymore, to be remembered and honored as always an honor. And Augusta is just a beautiful place," said Lopez.
The three time major champion received a key to the city, and the mayor declared today Nancy Lopez Day in recognition of her lifetime contributions to golf.
"That's what golf is all about, is giving back any way you can and being a part of the golf world is just an honor for me," explained Lopez.
"To be honored, asked to be honored like this was so fitting just really to put a capstone on her career and what it's meant to the game of golf," said Augusta City Mayor Hardie Davis.
Lopez won 52 professional events and was four time LPGA player of the year.
