ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Doctors at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital use a day in their honor to give back to the community.
On National Doctor's Day, the Phoebe Medical Staff presented $2500 checks to Flint River Habitat for Humanity and the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia.
Several years ago, the doctors started taking money the hospital would use to buy gifts for them and donating it to worthy organizations.
"The medical staff feels the best way that we can be honored is to give back to the community which is what we're all about as physicians in terms of we give of ourselves to our patients and our families and we felt that this money would be better spent on the community and it's needs rather than us," said Dr. John Vance, President of Phoebe Medical Staff.
The initiative also honors Dr. Hasan Rizvi who died in a car crash in 2014.
He was a co-founder of the concept nearly 8 years ago.
