DOUGLAS, GA (WALB) -

The Mayor of Douglas promoted gun safety at a news conference Tuesday evening.

Mayor Tony Paulk said that he's troubled that a 14-year-old had a gun. That teenager was put in custody for the the shooting death of an 18-year-old.

He's calling on parents to put their weapons in a safe place, to educate their children about gun safety and to know where their children are at all times.

"Never ever leave your weapon where your child can find it. You should often check to make sure your gun is still in a safe keeping spot. Just because it was safe on Monday does not mean that it is safe on Sunday," said Mayor Paulk.

Paulk said that he's working on a Mayor's Youth Council to promote leadership, volunteerism and community service for young people.

He is also asking the Police Department to create a program to keep youth from going down the wrong path.
