ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police Gang Unit commanders say gangs are becoming more social media savvy.

At Thursday's gang unit public meeting, Officers said gangs use social media to recruit members and pass information about crimes.

Police say in recent weeks, there have been a number of burglaries, entering autos, and purse snatchings committed by children as young as 12.
Gang unit commanders urge parents to monitor their children's social media interactions.

Gang Unit Commander Lt. Antonio Fletcher said "Social media has a broad spectrum.  They can do a bunch of things on there.  I can say that there is some gang activity that may go on social media sites.  But as a parent you just have to monitor what your child is doing."

Police say that all crimes by young people are not gang related, but they watch for trends to see if gangs are involved.
