BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) -

Bainbridge Public Safety officials are wrapping up controlled burning at the boat basin.

Throughout the week, firefighters conducted the prescribed burning to reduce fuel buildup around the nature trail.

The burning helps to stimulate germination, which helps to renew the forest.

Fire Chief Doyle Welch said with the warmer weather, the burning can prevent disasters.

"Last year, we had a few people come out here that were fishing and built some little campfires," said Major Welch. "And they didn't put them out and extinguish them.  And then we get a call at 9 or 10 o'clock that we had a woods fire. We had three of them within a week."

Major Welsh said these burns prevent large-scale fires in the woods.
