ASHBURN, GA (WALB) -

The city of Ashburn could have a new police chief in a couple weeks. The city narrowed down that list to three this week.

The mayor says all three would be great additions to the department. Current Ashburn Investigator Clifford Jordan is the only internal candidate. He recently came over from Dooly County.

ABAC police instructor Shane Benefield is the second finalist.

Former school resource officer and police officer Joseph Ezekiel is the third finalist.

Mayor Sedric Carithers says bringing in a chief who will build a bond with the community is most important.

“We want people to look up to police officers. Police officers aren't bad. They're out here to help the public and be good by the people. And we want to bridge that gap,” said Carithers.

The mayor says the interviews have concluded.

The interim chief's last day will be on April 6th, and they hope to name his replacement at the April 7th council meeting.
