ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Two lifesaving Albany police officers were honored Tuesday night.
City commissioners honored Corporal Darryl Jones as the Officer of the Year for solving multiple burglary, arson and motor vehicle theft cases.
Last month, he also helped save a passenger in a car who was choking.
Patrolman Jamie Sutton earned the Commander in Chief Award for risking his life to save a man threatening suicide.
Auto repair shop owner Tom Gieryic was named Citizen of the Year for starting the popular Back the Blue campaign.
Others who were recognized include:
- Farris Screen Printing: Mr. Hassan Mohamed
- All-American Fun Park: Mr. Buddy Blackwell
- Civilian of the Year: Ms. Juanita Clark
Albany Police Chief Michael Persley was also honored on Tuesday, he was awarded the Georgia Crisis Intervention Team Leadership Award.
He was selected for pushing to get 80 percent of APD's officers trained in Crisis Intervention.
