THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) -

The Thomas County school system is using some of its $2.7,000,000 grant to promote literacy for young children. Friday, mothers and their kids came to the Meigs Public Library to learn the importance of reading to your child before they enter Pre-K.

The "Before the Classroom" event taught parents how to interact with their child while reading.

The grant money also helped purchase new iPads for the library, so parents can incorporate the latest technology into the process.

"We do realize we do have some parents that can't read and so this will actually read to the child. They can still hold their baby," said Principal Jeanna Mayhall. "And we want them to hold their baby and read to their baby because that creates good feelings about reading. If they can't read, the iPad will do it for them."

The mothers were given a book to take home with them.

Other libraries in Thomas county will host the program in the coming months.
