ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Time is running out to sign up for the Albany Police Department's next Basic Firearms Course.

Citizens will learn more about gun laws and get training on how to use their weapon safely.

"They'll start off with instructional classroom style participation. We'll have a firearms trainer come in and do the first portion then the District Attorney will come in and cover the law," said APD Media Manager Phyllis Banks. "Then we'll take everything they learned in a classroom setting and put it to practical use out at the law enforcement range."

The course will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Those interested  can pick up an application at the Albany Police Department.

Applications must be turned in by Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Ahead of heavy rain showers and winds projected for our area, the Georgia State Patrol said there's not as many travelers on the roads during this holiday weekend.  "So far I think this attributed to the weather and gas prices being so high, it seems that in our area of the state, traffic has been down some," said Trooper Christopher Jewell, GSP Post 40.
