VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - It took crew several hours to re-open North Valdosta Road and Val Del Road overnight Tuesday following a crash.
According to GSP, a white GMC Sierra driven by 28-year-old John Tyler Whiddon of was heading north on North Valdosta Road.
The vehicle ran off the shoulder of the roadway and struck a guardrail end with the front end of the truck.
The GMC continued until it struck a utility pole with the front end of the vehicle.
Whiddon was taken by ambulance to the South Georgia Medical Center but refused treatment and left the hospital against medical advice.
Authorities are not sure at this time what caused Whiddon to run off the road.
The utility pole broke in two separate locations causing power lines to come down on the traffic light wires.
"Due to it striking the utility pole, the utility pole is not really safe for travel. It could come down at any minute, possibly causing more injury or hurting someone else that could be coming through the intersection," said Cpl. Chris Kelch with Georgia State Patrol.
Georgia Power was dispatched to the scene, where they repaired the pole.
Traffic was re-opened around 3:30 a.m.
