ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An Albany woman is in the Dougherty County jail charged with kidnapping a little girl Thursday.
Police say 20-year-old Kimyatta Peeples is the estranged girlfriend of the child's mother, Lillie Westmoreland.
Investigators say Peeples picked up 4-year-old Unique Westmoreland from her daycare center around 1:45 p.m. Thursday.
After a citywide alert, officers rescued the child about 8:20 p.m.
Peeples and the girl were at the apartment of some good Samaritans off Whispering Pines Road who were just giving them shelter from the rain.
Peeples was arrested while officers reunited the child with her mother.
"Seeing the smile on that four year old's face when seeing her mom coming up, knowing that you were able to pick up that child and put her in the loving arms of the mother where she belonged," said Detective Tim Harvey with Albany Police.
Officers say Unique Westmoreland was checked by EMS but was not hurt in the kidnapping.
Dr. Alma G. Noble, the owner of the daycare center, said in a statement Friday that they were within the state's guidelines to release the child to an authorized person.
