AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Walter James Mable is in jail charged with armed robbery after hitting a store clerk with a wooden board. A patrol officer caught the man a short distance away

Officers said this is the 26th time Mable has been arrested since 1986. This time, they say he tried to rob the Flash Foods on Crawford Street with a nailed up piece of wood.

The call came in around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. The store clerk told police that Mable hit him in the side with the board before running out.

Mable did not take anything from the store. Quick work by dispatch and police led a patrolling officer to Mable behind a grocery store a short distance away.

“I mean it just shows the dedication of the officers that responded to the scene, the communication that was given to us from the store as far as the description. And then the officer did a good job; he was able to locate this subject and run him down,” said Major Richard McCorkle with the Americus Police Department.

Mable is charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

The store directed us to their corporate offices and had no comment about the crime.
