AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - A homeowner said she is glad she wasn't home when a driver crashed through a fence and right into her Peachtree Street home, causing substantial damage.
Police said Horace Mays Jr. was driving the car, and arrested him for DUI.
"It went 'bow', 'clack' and everything went black dark," said Michael Cunningham as he described the commotion.
Twisted fence and broken bricks litter the yard in Americus. Inside the house, the damage is even worse.
"Totally dumbfounded," said homeowner Stella Ford.
The homeowner can't believe it.
"A truck coming through the house, what would you think if you didn't have a heart attack first," said Ford.
Neighbor Michael Cunningham ran up and noticed the truck still running, but the driver was long gone.
"We thought maybe someone had fell over, had a heart attack or something but we couldn't tell," said Cunningham.
Ford wasn't home; she was with her sister in law shopping for shoes.
"Other than that, I would've been at home watching TV," said Ford.
"Material stuff really doesn't matter to me. It was my life. That's what I was mainly thankful for," said Ford.
"It could have easily killed someone at the speed in which this vehicle was traveling. I know it was going pretty fast," said Cunningham.
Ford says it will likely take months to repair all of this damage. There was one more home affected in this accident. Right now, though, it appears Mays was uninjured.
