LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -
In the midst of a hectic basketball season the varsity guys get all the shine.
A new event at Lee County put an end to that this afternoon.
Its the first annual SOWEGA all star tournament, and it consists of Junior Varsity and below players. Kids from all over southwest Georgia participated, from Pelham to Dougherty County schools.
Invitees ranged from middle school players up to 10th graders, boys and girls. The organizer said the event is to introduce the community to the future hoops stars.
He's hoping it will grow by the year and he's making Leesburg its permanent home.
"We'll stay in Lee County because I got so much support from the community here," said Fred Pickett. "I'm getting support from everywhere because it's such a great event. And like I said it's absolutely free to the kids. They don't have to pay anything to play in this tournament."
Pickett said he hand picks the kids who he sees standing out throughout the season.
