ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany business owners gathered at police headquarters Wednesday afternoon to discuss ways to improve security protect themselves from criminals.

For the first time in 2016 APD Crime Prevention hosted a business watch meeting, and local business leaders walked away with valuable information.

The meeting is designed to give local businesses tips on how to prevent or help solve burglaries.

One key point was to make sure there is 24-hour surveillance. APD detectives said with the new and improved equipment, it's one of the easiest ways to track down criminals.

Business owners also heard from stores that sell the latest in security technology.

"Protect all your windows and your doors," said Mike Lawson of Central Monitoring. "That's easily done nowadays with the advances in the technology in the burglar alarms. You can arm, disarm a burglar alarm with your phone now."

APD also insisted some of these same tips can be used to protect not just businesses but homes.
