ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Across Albany, many roads are still covered by high water by this morning's heavy rains.

Barricades blocked part of Whispering Pines Road most of the day, but it was reopened later Wednesday evening.

City officials measured five and a half inches of rain during a three hour period. That overwhelmed parts of the drainage system.

Storm stations have been pushing water down canals to dry out the roads.

"The number one thing when you have your canals and ponds full like this is to keep the storm stations running, so you can keep the water moving through the system and it won't back up," said Albany Assistant City Manager Phil Roberson.

Four Albany homes sustained water damage inside.

The Fire Department responded to 38 calls from motorists stranded in flooded streets or people with water around their homes.
