CAMILLA, GA (WALB) - Last week, The City of Camilla received a levy notice from the IRS, addressed to Mayor Rufus Davis.
The levy covers tax periods from 2006 to 2009 and says Davis owes about $2.98 million dollars in back taxes and fines.
Mayor Davis says the levy notice is the result of losses he incurred in the 2008 financial crisis.
Well our comment to that is all of us lost money in the 2008 financial crisis, and yet the rest of us still paid our taxes.
He also said the amount he owes is less than 5% of the $2.98 million dollars, and he has already agreed to pay that.
Well we have a few questions about that. If you say the taxes owed were from the 2008 crisis, why did the levy mention taxes owed from as far back as 2006?
And If you had agreed to pay the taxes owed, why did the IRS need to send a levy notice? Maybe they did not agree you only owed 5% of that total.
It's not that we have very little sympathy for you Mr. Mayor, we have zero.
