WORTH CO., GA (WALB) - The Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday to make 'The Adoptable Dog' Georgia's official mascot.
The bill's author, Republican Joe Wilkinson of Sandy Springs said that it promotes animal rescue and highlights the thousands of dogs and cats currently available for adoption in Georgia.
Jody Yarbrough, the Executive Director of Best Friends Humane Society in Worth County thinks it's a great idea.
"It's a big step forward. It's really just the representation that there are just thousands of dogs everyday in Georgia in particular that are in rescues and in humane societies that need homes. Here at Best Friends Humane Society we've got over 60 dogs here that are in need of homes everyday," said Yarbrough.
Yarbrough hopes the bill will also highlight the need to spay and neuter pets.
He said that their adoption rate for cats and dogs is 86 percent.
