ALBANY, GA (WALB) - We're a little over month away from Albany welcoming it's new Indoor football team
First day of OTAs for the Georgia Firebirds was Saturday afternoon, and they celebrated by signing 9 players to the roster giving them a total of 20.
The Firebirds open the regular season on the road March 20th. Head coach David J Daniels likes the new additions.
"When I first look at players I start looking at what they bring to the table," said Daniels who also serves as assistant general manager. "Not just in physicality, in mentality. Look at the temperature out here today. They're out here. They're bringing that to the table right off the bat. They'll play football wherever football is being played."
"I've been working hard to get at this level, or a level higher," said newly signed quarterback Terez Wilkins. "And it's a big opportunity to me because I never played any arena football."
One of the new signees has played indoor. In fact he was a member of the Albany Panthers championship team years ago. Antonio Bearden looks to bring veteran leadership during training camp.
"That's the most important 30 days of our lives," said Bearden. "And that's how I really look at it. It's not the 10 weeks we're going to have in the season, it's these main preparations that's going to lead up to the championship we want to bring back to Albany this year."
The Firebirds have their 20-man gameday roster. They are still looking to fill up their practice squad.
