ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Governor Nathan Deal has proposed $1.1 million in his budget this session to move the Georgia National Guard Armory in Albany to the Marine Base.
We applaud this proposal, along with the quick action taken by Albany City and County leaders who quickly approved $400,000 in local funding.
For nearly a decade, Albany and Dougherty County leaders have been seeking to move the Armory to the Marine Base. They want to make sure Albany's Marine Corps Logistics Base has as many missions and community ties as possible, hoping to protect it during future base closure rounds.
Both commissions approved $200,000 apiece to meet the estimated one-and-a-half million dollar cost . If successful, the move would mark the FIRST time a guard unit has been located on a Marine Base, and supporters say it is a great way to help secure the base's future.
We hope that this item is not cut from the Governor's proposed budget and again, we applaud our local leadership for doing their part to ensure the move is ready to go!
