VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Officials with the Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed two inmates have died at Valdosta State Prison.
The two male inmates, identified as 36-year-old Cody Vestal and 31-year-old Richard Strickland, were pronounced dead at the facility Wednesday evening.
Prison officials said it appeared the two inmates started a fire inside their cell, and died in the flames.
They called the coroner around 6:30 p.m. to report the incident.
Corrections officials said the incident remains under investigation.
Valdosta State Prison is a close, or maximum, security prison. It opened in 1989 and is considered a Tier I and II facility.
