CORDELE, GA (WALB) - A man arrested in connection to the death of a man in Cordele now faces a murder charge.
21-year-old Marquerious Carter has been formally charged with felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and by a convicted felon.
Carter is accused of killing Sarfaraz Khan during a robbery at Eastside Grocery.
It was early Sunday morning when Khan and suspect Carter were both shot.
There was a scuffle with several shots fired. Carter was shot once in the leg. Khan died in the shooting.
Meanwhile, the doors of Eastside Grocery Store in Cordele are chained and locked up while the GBI continues their investigation.
"It was sad for me to hear about it, because I know how good the man is so for people to go around and do little evil stuff like that it ain't no cause for it," said resident Tonio Trice.
Trice grew up in Cordele and says it's unfortunate the store is now closed because it was one of the few in the area.
"It's not the store," he said. "It's the people. You can't close the store down."
This is not the first time the Eastside Grocery store has been robbed. In 2014 Khan talked about how his business was cut down almost 50 percent, and many customers never came back.
Robbie Edalgo works around the corner and says Cordele is a good place, but young people just need some guidance.
"There's some young people, often times young, some older, that have gotten astray on drugs," he said.
Carter is still being held at a hospital, and being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.
He was previously charged with armed robbery but pleaded guilty to lesser charges and avoid prison.
Once he's released he'll be transported to the Crisp County Jail.
