Purse theft caught on camera

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A woman's purse was stolen from her car in front of a Dougherty County School, and it was caught on camera. Now police want your help finding the thief.

The theft happened last Thursday morning at 9:30, in the drive of Morning Side Elementary School.

Tonya Lovette parked her Lincoln Town Car to drop off her son.

After a minute, the driver of the SUV stopped next to the car. Then watching the man, holding his phone up like he was talking on it, he walked over to the car and suddenly jumped inside and took Lovette's purse, then got back in his car, backed up and drove off.

"She just left her car unlocked with her purse in the car, thinking she was just going to run in and run right back out," said Chief Investigator J.C. Phillips. "But somebody took the opportunity and that's why we are calling this a crime of opportunity."

Police describe the suspect as a white male, about 5'8" tall, and 175 pounds.
