Americus man charged with theft and aggravated assault

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

An Americus man is now in jail and charged with stealing a car and smashing a beer can on a woman's head.

Investigators say Robert Sanders III stole a car around 7 p.m. Tuesday morning.

Officers were responding to a domestic issue involving Sanders when they saw him on the side of the road and arrested him for the auto theft.

A woman told officers that Sanders grabbed her grandson and then smashed a beer can on her head.

"Very concerning. Any time you have a juvenile involved in any incident with intoxication, that's very concerning to us," said Interim Chief Herman Lamar with the Americus Police Department.

Sanders is charged with aggravated assault, theft by taking and criminal trespass.
