Construction on the new cafeteria should begin in a few weeks
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
A new kitchen and cafeteria is coming to Albany High School.
On Wednesday, January 27, the Dougherty County School Board awarded the project to Kinney Company of Leesburg.
According to the school system’s facility director Bob Fowler, 75% of the workforce for the project will come from both Dougherty and Lee County and should not take too long to complete.
Fowler says, “New construction will begin probably in March and we’ll be complete in August of this year. So when school comes back, shortly after they come back into the building, they’ll be in their new cafeteria and kitchen.”
The new 14,000 square foot building will come with new tables, chairs, fixtures, and equipment. There are also plans to add a new teachers’ section and an outside dining area.
“It’s going to be a really nice building,” adds Fowler.
Right now, the food is being prepared at Dougherty Middle School and is being transported to Albany High School. The auditorium is serving as the school's temporary dining area.
The cost for the new cafeteria and kitchen is estimated to be around $4.2 million dollars.
