ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A new Miss Albany winner has been crowned.

Sara Whetsell is now the new Miss Albany 2016 and Sydney Sullivan was crowned Miss Flint River.

Contestants showed off their poise and talent at the Miss Albany Scholarship Pageant.

The pageant is a preliminary to Miss Georgia and is part of the Miss America Organization.

Through the Miss America program, contestants receive thousands of dollars in scholarship

assistance.

Executive Director Amanda Biery said, "We want to do our part in Albany and southwest Georgia to not only raise scholarship money for young women, but to also provide an outlet to perform their talents, develop interview skills, learn poise and posture on stage, and just become an overall citizen for our community."

Other winners tonight were crowned Miss Albany's Outstanding Teen and Miss Flint River's Outstanding.

Miss Albany and Miss Flint River will continue onto the Miss Georgia pageant in June.
