ALBANY, GA (WALB) - This is the 30th anniversary to Challenger Space Shuttle disaster. January 28, 1986 Challenger blew up during liftoff, killing all six astronauts aboard, including 37 year old New Hampshire school teacher Christa McAuliffe.
This is the memorial to those Challenger Astronauts erected outside Albany's Hasan Temple by Shriner Albert Hirschensohn and his wife Mollie. Dedicated one year later, it is a memorial to all the people killed in space exploration.
Thronateeska Planetarium Executive Director Tommy Gregors said "But for the greater good they commit and dedicate their lives, and gave their lives to make, I think, society better."
Families of the lost Challenger astronauts attended a NASA memorial ceremony Thursday morning at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
