Fraud through Facebook: Woman steals cellphone

Deputy Chief Mark Scott Deputy Chief Mark Scott

A woman who agreed through Facebook to buy a man's phone, stole that phone instead.

Gregory Potter said he made an agreement through Facebook to meet a prospective buyer in the 200 block of Slater King Drive about 4:45 yesterday afternoon.

Potter said when he showed the phone to the woman she snatched it, and ran off.

Police say setting up an in-person meeting with a stranger through social media can be dangerous but if you do it you should pick the spot.

"You can choose a public place, the public libraries. You can come up to the Police Department in the lobby.  There are a number of places that are public and open, with a lot of people around, where you can be a lot safer," said Deputy Chief Mark Scott.

Police categorize this incident as a robbery by sudden snatching and are investigating.
