Man shot by Lowndes Co. deputy

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - Lowndes County Sheriff's officials, The Georgia State Patrol, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at the Pilot truck stop, near Exit 11 on Interstate 75 in Lowndes County.

The sheriff's office confirms that a deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description of a suspected get away car, and confronted the driver. They say the man got out of the car, pointed a pistol at the deputy, and was shot by the officer.

The man, whose identity was not released, was taken by ambulance to South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta.

A woman who was also in the car was being questioned by detectives.

While the event was unfolding, deputies evacuated citizens out of the back of the building. No bystanders were hurt.

The lookout was issued in Hahira, after someone attempted to rob a business.

The GBI is conducting an investigation, and the deputy is placed on administrative leave, in accordance with the sheriff's policy.
