BERRIEN CO., GA (WALB) - The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate a fatal crash that happened Wednesday night in Berrien county.
Troopers confirmed a 12-year-old boy died in the accident, and his mother remains in the hospital.
The Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Reconstruction Team was out on the scene of the fatal accident Thursday.
Troopers were trying to piece together what happened moments before the mother and her son crashed into a tree.
Troopers say Luz Maria Huerta-Santos, 50, was driving a Saturn Ion north on Barber Shop Road, just south of Alapaha-Lenox Highway, around 6 o clock last night.
Investigators said Huerta-Santos drove off the west shoulder of the road into a creek.
The car then hit a concrete culvert.
It flipped over and hit a tree.
Her son died at the scene.
"I arrived on scene and observed the vehicle on its driver's side," said Trooper Steve Kornegay. "And the fire department extrication team was trying to get the two victims out. She was airlifted to Archbold Memorial in Thomasville."
Trooper Kornegay said Huerta-Santos is being treated for head injuries.
He also said both the mother and her son were wearing seat belts.
Troopers are not releasing the name of the boy who was killed.
