ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany are under new leadership this year, a man who grew up in the club.

After more than four decades with the Boys & Girls Club, Bob Hutchinson says it was time for him to retire, but he knows he left the organization in great hands.

After 44 years, Bob Hutchinson is giving up his title as Chief Professional Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany.

"I think it's at the point in time that it was my time to come out and try to relax and enjoy family,” said Bob Hutchinson.

Hutchinson has been with the organization in Albany for 37 years, working his way up to become the Chief Professional Officer in 2014. He says one of his first tasks was to close the East Albany Unit.

"I'm proud to sit up here and say that through the support of the city of Albany, we will be back in East Albany and we'll be better,” said Hutchinson.

He helped to expand the organization from 2 to 8 units, now serving more than 3500 kids.

"The community really supported us and done a lot of good positive things for our organization, so that we could help thousands of kids,” said Hutchinson.

He's now passing the torch to Marvin Laster, who he trained over the last year. Laster joined the club when he was 8-years-old and was state youth of the year in 1994, the same year Hutchinson offered Laster his first job.

"It's funny how time has a way of repeating itself,” said Marvin Laster, Chief Professional Officer. “I think that he says he's given me my first job and I think this will be my last one as well."

Laster says he plans to continue the legacy set by Hutchinson and others before him.

"We're advancing a bold new vision and that is to be an advocate for young people to ensure that we are seeking partnerships and resources to ensure that a great future is within reach of every child,” said Laster.

The new East Albany unit is set to open in May. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available for the upcoming Steak 'N Burger Dinner on March 10th at Darton State College. Contact the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany at 229-439-0196 for more information.
