Right now teachers and staff are busy getting trained for the changes they plan to implement at the beginning of next year.
School officials say this will give them more flexibility, and parents will have more influence in how the schools are run.
"It also allows parents and community members and industry to have a seat at the table in these local school governance teams to say how these schools are run," says J.D. Sumner, with Dougherty County Schools.
Each school would be overseen by a team that would include parents, who would have input into school issues such as budgets, improvement plans and personnel.
