ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Complete with his battle wounds from his third heart surgery, Michael Stephens, his mother Kay and sister Angel returned to Albany.
Michael will have to sit out 8-weeks before he can enjoy physical activity, so that means no football for now.
Outside of his physical limitations, Michael is on the upswing. He and Angel received a few Christmas presents from the community
And the Lee County Warriors and Dougherty County Xchange both offered Michael a spot on the team along with his own uniform.
Kay is thankful for the support, as Michael's full-time nurse she couldn't have provided presents on her own this year. This past week has been a roller coaster of emotions for the family.
Michael's rare operation was a first the surgeons. Sadly the doctors are predicting it won't be his last.
"He said it was several things they found wrong that has to be fixed" said Kay. "Even after the surgery he said Michael's case is extremely rare. He said we've seen a lot of things but we haven't seen anything like this before. With the way his heart grew in abnormal. It's not something you have to go back into surgery tomorrow about, but we know within the next several months we're going to be preparing for more heart surgeries."
But just like Kay has for Michael, the 9-year-old has kept fighting.
