ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The southbound lanes at Jefferson Street on U.S. 19 have now been reopened.

The Albany Police Department closed the area on the bypass earlier due to a possible sinkhole. APD has contacted the GA Dept. of Transportation so that they can provide a better assessment.

Traffic was being redirected to the access road that leads towards North Washington Street.

The hole was determined to only be erosion from the rain. The area currently does not pose any hazard for drivers. Officials have made temporary repairs to the road, and will continue work on the bypass in the coming week.
