WARWICK, GA (WALB) - The Crisp County Power Commission says the water level in Lake Blackshear is still stabilized, but rain has delayed any reduction in the level. As of Wednesday morning, the lake level at the Dam is 236.5, six inches below normal.
The water level at the Dam has risen very slightly since midnight. Areas above the Highway 280 Bridge remain above normal pool.
Of the 13 available gates, 12.5 are open. The Current Flint River Level at Montezuma is 20.3 feet, with a flow of 33,000 cubic feet per second. The current forecast indicates the Montezuma level will slowly decline until shortly after midnight Wednesday, when increasing rainfall will cause the river to begin rising again. A second peak is now forecast at 21.8 feet on Sunday, January third.
Due to the effects of increased inflow from upstream caused by forecast rainfall, flows through the Lake are anticipated to remain very high for the next week to 10 days. All or most of the floodgates at the dam will remain open during that period to pass the high flows.
Based on the flows the Commission will make decisions about future gate operations. Getting all the gates closed will be a slow process, which may take two weeks. Commission staff will continue to monitor the situation and make periodic updates.
