Ocmulgee River near Abbeville expected to reach major severity by Friday

ABBEVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Forecast flooding has been increased from moderate to major severity for the Ocmulgee River near Abbeville.

According to officials, the flood stage is 12 feet, at 8:45 a.m. Sunday the stage was 13.5 feet and rising.

At this time, minor flooding is occurring but major flooding is forecast to develop.

Officials anticipate the river will continue to rise, reaching 18.3 feet by Friday.

At 13 feet, minor flooding of lowlands adjacent to the river continues to expand into the flood plain. Flooding of the nearby park and parking lot at the Abbeville boat ramp also expands.

At 14 feet, moderate flooding begins. Roads to the homes along the west side of the river in Abbeville become inaccessible.

And at 18 feet, major flooding begins. Homes begin to flood on the west side of the river in Abbeville just downstream from the boat ramp and park. Residents will need to be evacuated by boat if they are not already out.
