The Sumter County School Superintendent Donnie Smith will be stepping down from his position on December 31st.
The school board voted to accept his resignation but said that Smith will remain on as a consultant.
Smith has worked in the Sumter County system for 24 years and served as superintendent for the last 3 ½ years.
Smith said that it was time for him to step down and that he looks forward to helping the system in the future.
The board is expected to appoint an interim superintendent.
