THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Construction for the Thomasville High School gymnasium is underway with only one week left before its grand opening.

Its been a long, exciting, ten months for the students at Thomasville High School and now the wait will be just a bit longer. The new gym was expected to be complete today but as you can see there's more work to be done. administrators say the gym will be complete next week.

"I think that's the key to make sure we provide an opportunity to perform at their best and this way they have the opportunity now to not only perform but have more people in the stands and now they have a chance to have more loved ones in the stands to cheer for them and encourage them along the way and that important," said Coach Tillman.

The $4,000,000 gym is 30,000 sq ft. and seats about 1,100 people. Amenities include instructional film rooms for coaches, a brand new scorer's table, locker rooms, and of course the basketball court. This is the first gym the city school system has ever built.

"Considering this school system has been built since 1900 so 115 years in that we get our first gymnasium so I think the board members had a part in this and our leadership in the system should be definitely proud of what we accomplished here," said Levi Williams, CFO for Thomasville City Schools.

And many basketball players are looking forward to playing in the new gym.

Basketball player Jordan Willis said, "Oh yeah, we're gonna win regardless no matter where we're playing at but now that we have a new gym its gonna bring a lot more people and we'll have a whole lot more attention, because everybody already knows what they get when they come here, once they come play us we're probably gonna win."

Administrators will have a grand opening for the new gymnasium next Thursday at the Hoop Fest...All members of the community are welcome to come.
