New traffic signal to open on N. Slappey ahead of Walmart opening

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Drivers will soon encounter a new traffic signal on North Slappey Boulevard near the Liberty Expressway.

Crews have been working on a new stop light to aid traffic going into and exiting from a new Walmart Neighborhood Market scheduled to open in January.

The traffic signal will begin operating on December 21.

It will operate about 500 feet south of the traffic light that operates at the entrance and exit ramps coming from and leaving the Liberty Expressway.

Transportation officials urged drivers to remain alert while traveling on this part of North Slappey ahead of the completion date.

DOT officials say Walmart conducted a traffic study which showed a large amount of traffic through that area of more than 23,000 cars a day.

Plus with the store and gas pumps being open 24 hours a day, traffic operations believes it would be a good idea to install a light.

“They feel again because of the type of intersection it is, because it’s a T intersection, it's not a four-way, your traffic cycle is not going to be as long because you’re not having traffic come from four different directions,” says Nita Birmingham, District Communications Officer.
Walmart is paying for the signal.
The city of Albany will be responsible for maintenance and timing.
