(RNN) - Takata's air bag defect recalls overshadowed all others, with 34 million air bags and at least 12 manufacturers involved.

Faulty Takata air bags, which could expand with too much force and cause metal shards to fly out at passengers, resulted in at least six deaths worldwide, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

The federal investigation into issues with Takata air bags began in May and resulted in at least 44 recalls.

The NHTSA ordered the company to accelerate fixes, submit to federal oversight and pay civil penalties up to $200 million.

From General Motors to General Mills and everything in between, the top recalls of the year impacted millions of consumers.

The recalls covered other automobile issues, chicken contamination fear and suspected metal parts in mac and cheese, to name a few faults.

Some of the recalls that made the news - such as the massive Blue Bell ice cream recall that shocked the South, didn't make the cut in the list of 25 top recalls released by Find The Company.

The Blue Bell recall in April, spurred by a listeria outbreak linked to its ice cream that caused 3 deaths and 10 illnesses, caused production to stop at all four of the company's plants. The company since has resumed operations.
