Authorities search for smash and grab burglar

EARLY CO., GA (WALB) -

Investigators are on the lookout for a burglar who used a baseball bat to smash in the front door of a store.

It was around 3 a.m. Monday when a burglar decided to break into the BP U.S. Food mart off of Hwy 84 in Jakin.

The store's surveillance cameras caught the thief using a baseball bat to smash the front door.

He then goes behind the counter where he stays for quite a long time.

When you look at if from this angle you can see the burglar drops cash and lottery tickets he is trying to steal.

"I think he was in there for so long because he dropped all of his loot and all of the cash and stuff that he was able to get out of the drawer," said Early County Investigator Michael Rogerson.

The thief got into one cash register that had the key in it, he tried to get into another register but couldn't so he picked up the whole register and took it.

"Took some lottery tickets and was unable to gain access to the second cash register so he just took that with him," Rogerson said.

The burglar uses some type of cloth or t-shirt to cover his face, but here you can see the camera catches a quick glimpse of his face.

And investigators say his unique jacket will help track him down.

"I haven't seen very many of those sweatshirts before so I think that will help," said Rogerson.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Early County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said the criminal took about 50 to 100 lottery tickets from the convenience store.
